Union Hospital is calling on members of the Wabash Valley community to consider donating blood with Indiana Blood Center to ensure stable blood supplies for its patients. During the last year, Indiana Blood Center provided the hospital with nearly 6,000 blood components – red blood cells, platelets and plasma – to help local patients in need of any number of treatments, such as fighting cancer, having surgery or requiring a medical emergency.
"Union Hospital and Indiana Blood Center work together every day to ensure the people of Terre Haute and Vigo County have the necessary blood components needed to help with numerous health conditions," said Union Hospital President and CEO Scott Teffeteller. "This partnership allows us to meet the diverse blood component needs of our two hospitals which depend on a robust and readily accessible blood supply. Without it, Union Hospital would be unable to provide the advanced, quality healthcare that is so critical to the health and well-being of our patients."
To maintain adequate blood supplies, Union Hospital requires 135 -150 units of blood on hand at all times. Transfusions on any given day depend on patient need. For instance, the average caregiver uses up to six units of blood after each chemotherapy treatment just to restore a cancer patient's strength.
"Cancer doesn't take a weekend or a holiday," said Byron Buhner, president and CEO of Indiana Blood Center. "To meet the patient needs at more than 60 hospitals throughout the state, including those in Vigo County, Indiana Blood Center must see 550 donors each and every day.
"We will depend on the people in the Terre Haute area community to raise their sleeves to help us keep Union Hospital adequately supplied with blood components that will ultimately benefit many of those donors' friends and neighbors."
Indiana Blood Center operates a Terre Haute donor center at 2021 S. Third St., one of nine donor centers in the state. The team also staffs blood drives throughout Vigo County. To view a list of upcoming blood drives or to schedule a blood donation appointment, visit www.donorpoint.org or call (812) 238-2495.
Union Hospital will host a blood drive on Jan. 6 from 7 a.m. to 3:45 p.m. in the Union Hospital East Atrium, 1606 N. 7th St. Also, the Blood Mobile will also be parked on Union's campus in the Professional Office Building parking lot, 1530 N. 7th St., and accepting donations from 8:30 a.m. to 3 p.m.

Terre Haute, IN -- Union Hospital announces that it has received Chest Pain Center Accreditation from the Society of Chest Pain Centers (SCPC), an international organization dedicated to eliminating heart disease as the number one cause of death worldwide. Union Hospital has been accredited since 2008 and Union Hospital Clinton was reaccredited in April.
Hospitals that have received SCPC accreditation have achieved a higher level of expertise in dealing with patients who arrive with symptoms of a heart attack. They emphasize the importance of standardized diagnostic and treatment programs that provide more efficient and effective evaluation as well as more appropriate and rapid treatment of patients with chest pain and other heart attack symptoms. They also serve as a point of entry into the healthcare system to evaluate and treat other medical problems, and they help to promote a healthier lifestyle in an attempt to reduce the risk factors for heart attack.
