Terre Haute, IN (May 8, 2012) – The Union Hospital Center for Fitness & Performance is teaming up with the Vigo County School Corporation to make elementary aged school children more aware of living a healthy lifestyle by keeping fit at an early age. All 8,000 Vigo County elementary aged school children attending a Vigo County elementary school, along with the 2,200 staff members of all of the Vigo County schools, will receive a performance sport shirt, a jump rope and a water bottle, courtesy of The Union Hospital Center for Fitness & Performance. In addition, two teachers from each of the elementary schools in Vigo County will receive a free monthly membership to the Center for Fitness & Performance.
This initiative is in conjunction with The Vigo County Health & Wellness program, and is designed to promote fitness awareness to elementary aged children, with the idea that early understanding of the importance of being fit will resonate with the children throughout their lives. Including the teachers and staff will provide a forum for discussion between students and adult members of the schools. The specific goal of this initiative is to encourage all children to exercise by jumping rope at least 15 minutes after school and on weekends (jump ropes); to keep themselves hydrated (water bottles); and to have the opportunity to wear perspiration wicking clothing, which draws perspiration away from the body, while exercising (performance sport shirts).
“We are thrilled to have the opportunity to work with the school corporation on this project”, said Rayetta Gillaspy, manager of the Fitness Center. “Educating our children at an early age, and actually getting kids moving more is a great way to begin building lifelong habits”.
This add on to the Vigo County Health & Wellness Program was approved by Daniel Tanoos, Vigo County School Corporation Superintendent, as a bonus to the existing program.
The Union Hospital Center for Fitness & Performance provides its members a safe, accessible and inviting setting in which to exercise. The center strives to teach, encourage and challenge its members toward healthy lifestyles through fitness activities. Current, motivating and safe fitness activities and instruction promote the health and well-being of the Union Hospital family and its community.

Union Hospital Clinton to Partner with Providence Medical Group - Hematology and Oncology to Provide Telemedicine Services

Union Hospital’s Richard G. Lugar Center for Rural Health, along with Dr. Sang Huh and Dr. Ryan Gonzales are proud to announce the expansion of Union Hospital Clinton’s (UHC) telemedicine program to include hematology and oncology services. Through a generous grant offered from HRSA’s Office for the Advancement of Telehealth (OAT), the Lugar Center was able to partner with UHC and the two physicians to offer consultations for patients with cancer and other blood disorders through a secure, two-video interaction known as telemedicine. Like the other telemedicine specialties offered at UHC, consults can be ordered by the patient’s family physician, hospitalist, or emergency room provider. Once the order is received, nursing staff gather and send important patient information to the specialists before the video interaction with the patient at UHC takes place. During the consult, patients are placed in front of a device that looks very much like a television screen which allows patients to see, here, and speak to the specialist just as if they were at the bedside. The specialists are also able to hear heart tones and breath sounds through a digital stethoscope that the UHC nursing staff operate during the consult. After the consult is complete, the physician sends any new orders or recommendations to UHC.
According to Lynn Adams, FNP “The challenge of specialty physicians’ is being able to balance the time spent on the road and time spent in the office with their patients”. Adams went on to say that “Telemedicine offers the physicians’ time in the office and meaningful outreach to rural patients, it is the best of both worlds”.
Since starting their telemedicine in 2007, UHC has grown an impressive telemedicine program that includes the following specialties: behavioral health, cardiology, pulmonology, and nephrology, which made adding this specialty a seamless fit.
For more information about this project please contact Angela Powell or Stephanie Laws at Union Hospitals, Richard G. Lugar Center for Rural Health at (812)237-8698. This program is funded by the HRSA Office for Advancement of Telehealth (Grant # H2ARH20178)

Terre Haute, IN -- Union Hospital announces that it has received Chest Pain Center Accreditation from the Society of Chest Pain Centers (SCPC), an international organization dedicated to eliminating heart disease as the number one cause of death worldwide. Union Hospital has been accredited since 2008 and Union Hospital Clinton was reaccredited in April.
Hospitals that have received SCPC accreditation have achieved a higher level of expertise in dealing with patients who arrive with symptoms of a heart attack. They emphasize the importance of standardized diagnostic and treatment programs that provide more efficient and effective evaluation as well as more appropriate and rapid treatment of patients with chest pain and other heart attack symptoms. They also serve as a point of entry into the healthcare system to evaluate and treat other medical problems, and they help to promote a healthier lifestyle in an attempt to reduce the risk factors for heart attack.
