Hoosier Rural Preceptorship
The Summer Hoosier Rural Preceptorship is a summer experience for students who are enrolled in medical school in the United States during the summer between their first and second year of medical school. The purpose of the Preceptorship is to introduce medical students to rural family medicine in underserved populations in Indiana. The experience includes hands-on training at various rural sites.
Students who are selected for the program will have an eight-week summer experience. The program is divided up into four two-week periods, with two of the two-week periods being conducted in the practice of various rural physicians. All students will spend two weeks at our model rural training site of the Richard G. Lugar Center for Rural Health which is located in Clay City, Indiana. The other two-week period is spent at a nearby rural hospital. In addition to the above activities, students will be introduced to other underserved populations during the summer including working with other community health organizations such as the county health nurse, nursing home visits, county sanitation officer, etc. This training site is designed to introduce medical students to multi-disciplinary, community-based primary sites. Students in the project will also have access to the library and computer facilities at the Richard G. Lugar Center for Rural Health which is located in the Landsbaum Center for Health Education. The project is under the direction of Union Hospital's Richard G. Lugar Center for Rural Health.
Stipends - Students selected for the summer program will receive a stipend to help offset their living costs during the eight-week program. Students eligible for this program must be in good standing in a U.S. allopathic or osteopathic medical school (and have passed all exams at the end of the first year of school). A focus on rural family medicine is also important.
Application deadline for the 2012 year is February 10, 2012.
