Lymphedema Therapy Lymphedema is chronic swelling in a portion of the body, usually an arm or leg, due to the accumulation of lymph fluid in the tissue spaces as a result of an obstruction of the lymph nodes. Individuals whose cancer surgery included lymph node removal or who have any swelling in the arm, hand, chest or leg are candidates for evaluation. Individuals who have chronic swelling in one or both legs without any history of cancer should also be evaluated.
