Lymphedema Therapy

Lymphedema is chronic swelling in a portion of the body, usually an arm or leg, due to the accumulation of lymph fluid in the tissue spaces as a result of an obstruction of the lymph nodes.

Individuals whose cancer surgery included lymph node removal or who have any swelling in the arm, hand, chest or leg are candidates for evaluation. Individuals who have chronic swelling in one or both legs without any history of cancer should also be evaluated.

LymphedemaLymphedema, if untreated, can interfere with wound healing and provides an environment for bacteria, increasing the potential for infection. If swelling and inflammation persist, the tissue eventually thickens and hardens, which can intensify the problem.

Union Hospital Outpatient Therapy Services, located in the AP&S Bone and Joint Center at 1725 North 5th Street in Terre Haute, is a provider of lymphedema treatment. Our staff includes a licensed physical therapist who has specialized training in the treatment of lymphedema and is a Certified Lymphedema Therapist.

Anyone can contact the Union Hospital Outpatient Therapy Center at (812) 238-7210 for information and assistance. We require a physician referral to initiate treatment.
