Union Hospital's CEO announces retirement date
April 23, 2010

David R. Doerr, president and chief executive officer of Union Hospital, Inc., Terre Haute, Indiana, has announced his retirement from Union Hospital effective June 1, 2011.

Doerr rose to lead Union Hospital in 2000 after having served the organization in a variety of roles since 1987. During his tenure, Doerr oversaw the largest facility expansion in the hospital's history. With quality and safety as his mantra, the organization set its sights on becoming one of the best in its class in the country and has since received numerous accolades for being the most preferred hospital to receive care and to work. Through his leadership, Union has embarked on innovative paths to improve access to healthcare for rural Americans through the Rural Health Innovation Collaborative (RHIC). With the establishment in 2009 of the Union Health System, Doerr brought Union Hospital and the UAP Clinic (formerly AP&S Clinic) into a new model designed to improve quality and enhance working relationships between hospitals and physicians.

Doerr, 61, has been with Union Hospital since 1987.  He served as Vice President of Business Development from January 1987 to April 1989 when he was promoted to the position of Senior Vice President and acted in that capacity until January 1995 when he was promoted to Chief Operating Officer.  He was appointed as interim CEO in September 1999 and in February 2000 was promoted to President and Chief Executive Officer. Prior to his employment with the Hospital, he was employed as Administrator at Sullivan County Community Hospital (formerly Mary Sherman Hospital), Sullivan, Indiana.  Doerr also served in various Leadership positions at Union Hospital from 1979 through 1982.

He is a graduate of Indiana University earning his Masters Degree in Health Administration in 1979 and his Bachelor of Science in Nuclear Medicine Technology in 1976. He is a member and Regent of the American College of Healthcare Executives and American Hospital Association.  He has served on the Boards of Directors of Clarian Health Network, VHA Central, Affiliated Hospitals of Indiana, Inc., Hamilton Mental Health Center, and Ivy Tech Community College. He served as Chairman of the Board for the United Way of the Wabash Valley and the Terre Haute Chamber of Commerce and Chairman of the Board for Indiana Health and Hospital Association.

"I'm very proud of what Union Hospital has achieved and feel privileged to have had the opportunity and career that I've had here. Char and I chose a great place to live, work and raise a family," said Doerr. "It's a good time to close this chapter and see what the next one brings."

"Dave has been an outstanding leader for Union Hospital. I don't believe we'd find ourselves in the strong position we do now without having Dave at the helm the past several years. The board appreciates the advanced notice of his decision so we can be assured of a smooth and orderly transition," said John Lukens, chairman of the Union Hospital board of directors. The board will name a search committee and select a search firm to assist with the process of identifying and vetting a new chief executive officer.

Doerr has lead the Wabash Valley's largest healthcare system composed of Union Hospitals in Terre Haute and Clinton, and more than 40 employed physicians. Union Hospital, Inc. employs about 2,400 people in more than 12 locations throughout the Valley. Doerr also serves as president of the Union Health System and the Union Hospital Foundation.
