Union Hospital's Richard G. Lugar Center and West Central Community Hospital Launch Tele-Cardiology Program
Emergency department patients with chest pain are evaluated utilizing an evidence-based model to determine their risk level, the best place for their treatment, and if they are a candidate for a tele-cardiology consultation.

Their Emergency Department caregiver completes an easy-to-use checklist to communicate with the cardiologist. After transmitting the patients past medical condition, current condition status and other key data points to the cardiology team, the patient is taken to a telemedicine examination room for a live, real-time video-conference with the cardiologist.

The cardiologists are able to listen to the patient's heart tones and breath sounds during the video-conference and provide treatment recommendations as well as treatment orders for the patient at the conclusion of the examination. West Central Community Hospital has completed 35 successful tele-cardiology examinations since the program began twelve weeks ago.

The program was designed for patients in rural areas to help overcome numerous barriers to access specialty health care services. The distance to reach larger health centers often places restrictions on access to essential health care services. Union Hospital's Lugar Center, a leader in the provision of telemedicine services, recently took these steps to expand its current mental health telemedicine program with the Hospital.

In keeping with the Lugar Center's mission of "advancing rural health through education, innovation and collaboration," the Lugar Center team has been working to reduce the geographical limitations of receiving specialty heart health care at West Central Community Hospital. Utilizing a generous grant from the Indiana State Office of Rural Health, the Lugar Center has partnered with West Central Community Hospital, AP&S Cardiology, and Providence Cardiology to set up this very unique telemedicine network.

Findings from the project will be shared with other healthcare providers around the state in hopes of expanding the project. For more information on this project please contact Stephanie Laws, Project Associate at Union Hospital's Richard G. Lugar Center for Rural Health, at 238-7479.
